Programs

KSKA airs news, health, science, arts, entertainment, music and local programs from a variety of sources every day. Some programs we produce in Anchorage in our own studios, while we pick up others from National Public Radio (NPR), the Alaska Public Radio Network (APRN), Public Radio International (PRI), American Public Media (APM), the BBC and lots of independent producers.

Alaska Radio Reader Rambler (KSKA)

Algo Nuevo - Something New (KSKA)
Hosted by Anchorage’s Dave Luera, this new (2007) Latino music program brings Cumbia, Marangue, Salsa and other styles to KSKA’s airwaves each week. Show announcements are bilingual so Spanish and English speakers can enjoy this rich musical heritage together. Listen Fridays at 11:00 p.m. and Sundays at 8:30 p.m.

Anchorage Edition (KSKA)
Michael Carey hosts a weekly, half-hour news analysis talk show with local journalists. Listen Fridays at 2:30 p.m.. Produced by KAKM public television, Anchorage Edition rebroadcasts on Saturday evenings at 6:00 p.m.

Community Forum (KSKA)
Local guests discuss community issues and take listener calls during this LIVE call-in show. The Forum features conversations with leaders and decision-makers in local and statewide government, social service agencies, educational institutions and cultural groups. Produced in cooperation with Barbara Brown, this one-minute radio program offers a daily thought from literature, history or culture designed to change the world. Host Dr. Thad Woodard and guests discuss a variety of health-related topics during this LIVE call-in show. Line One features local physicians and national subject experts from the fields of nutrition, childcare, pharmacology, surgery, psychology and more. Each week we record a local lecture, oftentimes at the Alaska World Affairs Council, and deliver the talk to your radio and PC. Local News (KSKA)
KSKA’s Len Anderson covers the news in the Anchorage metro area. Len reports on events in the Anchorage Assembly and Anchorage School Board meetings plus stories from the city’s culture, politics and people. His reports appear during the Morning Edition and All Things Considered blocks, and during Alaska News Nightly. Night Music (KSKA)
This program features classic jazz as well as avant-garde jazz. Kirk Waldaus hosts every other week with Connie G from the KSKA studios in Anchorage. Listen Saturdays at 8:00 p.m.

Something Different (KSKA)
Two hours of eclectic music from KSKA and your host, Betsy. Something Different is a unique mix of contemporary, acoustic, and music I’ll-bet-you’ve-never-heard-before. Listen every other Sunday (alternates with Traveling Music) from noon to 2:00 p.m.

Soul to Soul (KSKA)
Hosts Marvell and Sherry Johnson play contemporary urban music as well as classic soul, taking dedications in “The Love Zone.” Soul to Soul has been a volunteer music program on KSKA since 1978. Listen Saturdays from 10:00 p.m. to Sunday at 2:00 a.m.

Stage Talk (KSKA)
Theater critics  Mark Muro and Jean Paal take listeners backstage to chat with actors, directors, playwrights and technical artists about the theater scene in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley. Included in each weekly conversation is a calendar of the best live performances and stage events in Southcentral Alaska. Listen Fridays at 2:15 p.m.

Traveling Music (KSKA)
Shonti Elder presents Alaskan and nationally-known musicians like Bonnie Raitt, Claudia Schmidt, Dougi McLean, John Gorka and many others. Listen every other Sunday (alternates with Something Different) from noon to 2:00 p.m.

Alaska Economic Report (APRN)
Check in on current and future economic trends and business events affecting Alaska’s economy. Listen weekday mornings at 8:30 during Morning Edition.

Alaska Fisheries Report (KMXT)
Produced by public radio station KMXT in Kodiak — home of the largest fishing fleet in the Pacific Northwest, AFR is a 15-minute weekly review of news from Alaska’s vibrant fishing industry. Listen Fridays at 2:00 p.m.

Alaska Morning News (APRN)
Take a 5-minute spin through Alaska’s statewide headlines before heading out for the day. Listen weekday mornings at 7:06 and 8:06 during Morning Edition.

Alaska News Nightly (APRN)
ANN has been evening drive “appointment radio” for Alaskans for nearly 30 years. APRN and public radio reporters from across Alaska team up for this statewide half-hour news program, providing in-depth information on events in every corner of the state and from Washington, D.C. Listen weekday evenings at 6:00 p.m.

Encounters (KCAW - Sitka)
Encounters is a seasonal weekly program exploring Alaska’s natural world. Recorded in the wild by award-winning nature writer and cultural anthropologist Richard Nelson, the 1999-2001 writer laureate of Alaska). Nelson describes what happens around him, including scientific information about the subject often mixed with Alaskan native teachings and perspectives from his own experience. Encounters typically airs about half the year starting in the fall. Listen Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 8:30 p.m.

Produced by Shana Sheehy right here in Alaska, Spirit of Youth is a weekly 2-minute story of youth in our community making a difference and finding their place in the world.

Talk of Alaska (APRN)
This is Alaska’s only statewide LIVE call-in forum for discussing the issues impacting life on the Last Frontier. Politics, science, culture and current events are covered by host Steve Heimel along with guests and callers. Listen Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.

Hosted by one of Africa’s best-loved broadcast personalities — Georges Collinet — Afropop Worldwide is a radio program, a web site, a searchable database, an international musical archive, a team of researchers and a travel series to Africa and Latin America. All Things Considered (NPR)
Every afternoon some of the nation’s best reporting, commentary and analysis can be heard on this premier NPR news magazine. KSKA includes local news and weather alongside ATC’s national hosts Michele Norris, Melissa Block and Robert Siegel who bring you breaking news, in-depth analysis and features gathered from around the world. Listen weekday evenings from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

A Prairie Home Companion (APM)
PHC is one of the most popular entertainment programs on public radio. Host, author and radio personality Garrison Keillor is the mastermind behind this weekly 2-hour live variety show featuring comedy, music, storytelling and “the news from Lake Wobegone.” Listen LIVE Saturdays at 2:00 p.m.; repeats Sundays at 10:00 a.m.

Are We Alone? (SETI Institute)
From amoebas to zebras, from androids to antimatter, Are We Alone? explores the science that makes life possible. Bioneers
“Bioneers” are social and scientific innovators from all walks of life who have peered into the heart of living systems to understand how nature operates, and to mimic “nature’s operating instructions” to serve human ends without harming the web of life. Brazilian Hour
Made possible by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Brazilian Hour promotes the best Brazilian music and culture around the world. Written and produced in Los Angeles by Sergio Mielniczenko. Listen Fridays at 10:00 p.m.

Car Talk (NPR)
Tom and Ray Magliozzi — “Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers” — have been dispensing expert car advice and more on the Peabody Award-winning program for 20 years. Each week, they take listener calls and create an hour’s worth of automobile mayhem, interspersed with intelligent advice on car repair. Listen Saturdays at 11:00 a.m.

City Arts and Lectures
City Arts & Lectures is a weekly program featuring talks and conversations with outstanding figures in literature, criticism, science, and the performing arts, offering the most diverse perspectives about ideas and values. Edicion Semanaria (Radio Bilingue)
Produced by Radio Bilingue, Edicion Semanaria is a 15-minute newscast in Spanish covering the week’s news in Spanish. Listen Sundays at 7:30 p.m.

Epicentro Politico (HCN)
Produced by Hispanic Communications Network, Epicentro Politico is an hour-long program of national and international news in Spanish, featuring in-depth interviews and roundtable discussion and analysis of the week’s news and current events. Listen Sundays at 8:00 p.m.

Fresh Air (NPR)
This weekday interview and features program is a fresh look at contemporary art, music, politics and history. The Peabody Award-winning Fresh Air brings newsworthy guests from worlds as diverse as literature and economics to be interviewed by a host — Terry Gross — who allows guests to shine. Morning Edition draws public radio’s largest audience with its fresh, incisive roundup of the top stories from around the planet. During the Morning Edition block KSKA includes local news and APRN’s morning reports to give you the latest updates from local, state, national and international reporters, analysts and commentators. Listen weekdays starting at 1:00 a.m. local time. The main Morning Edition broadcast for KSKA starts at 5:00 a.m. with local and state news updates included in the 5:00 - 9:00 a.m. block.

Mountain Stage (WVPB)
Mountain Stage is a weekly two-hour live music show produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and features some of the world’s greatest artists in an intimate and relaxed atmosphere with a live-broadcast edge. It’s a great blend of studio quality with live performance before a theater audience. Each program features four or five guests. Listen Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

National Native News
A regular, timely and balanced source of news about Native American and Alaska Native communities, including social, economic and cultural issues nationwide.

On the Media (NPR / WNYC)
Explore how the media “sausage” is made and examine threats to the freedom of information and expression in America and abroad. While maintaining the civility and fairness that are the hallmarks of public radio, OTM tackles sticky issues with a frankness and transparency that has built trust with listeners and led to more than a tripling of its audience in five years.
