Alaska Monitoring Tsunami Situation

Sat, Feb 27, 2010

The Associated Press – Anchorage

Officials at the Alaska emergency coordination center are monitoring the tsunami situation after the earthquake in Chile. Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs deputy commissioner McHugh Pierre says they will begin to notify communities if the wave develops later Saturday.

Bill Knight is the tsunami warning and science officer at the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer. He says based on early morning models of the tsunami, he didn’t expect this to escalate beyond advisory level for Alaska. He says the state has seen far more damaging tsunamis than this one probably will be. Projections of wave measurements include 1.3 feet at Sitka and Seward and 2.3 feet at Kodiak.

KSKA also will continue monitoring the situation and updating reports for listeners.

UAA’s Ulmer to Retire in 2011

Fri, Jan 22, 2010

University of Alaska Anchorage Chancellor Fran Ulmer says she will retire in 2011.

Ulmer is a former lieutenant governor and in 2002 was the Democratic candidate for governor. She was defeated by Republican Frank Murkowski. In a letter to UAA faculty and staff, Ulmer says there’s a good team in place at the school and her departure in 18 months should not be disruptive.

She listed several things she hopes to accomplish and said some may be difficult in her current position. Ulmer says she hopes to work on public policy issues in Alaska, either independently or affiliated with the university. She also cites family concerns, her husband’s retirement and the birth of her first grandchild last year as reasons to make a change.
