Live Coverage: President Obama on Iraq

Tuesday during All Things Considered President Barrack Obama will address the nation from the Oval Office. Obama promised in 2009 to end the formal “combat” mission in Iraq on August 31. Earlier this week the White House said the number of U.S. troops staged in Iraq had fallen below 50,000. Iraq is scheduled to assume its own security after Tuesday, with the U.S. falling into an advisory and backup role. President Obama makes his second official Oval Office address to the nation on  All Things Considered (Tuesday) from 4:00 – 4:30 pm.

Beginning Monday August 30, 2010 look forward three new programs on KSKA, including: Marketplace Money on Monday nights at 9:00 pm, a two-hour mix an eclectic new music on World Cafe weekdays from 9:00 – 11:00 pm, and Kids Theses Days, a new local program about raising kids in Alaska. Kids Theses Days makes its public radio debut on KSKA as part of the all-Alaska block weekdays at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Kids Theses Days (KTD!) makes it public radio debut on KSKA Tuesday August 30 as part of the all-Alaska block weekdays at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Shana Sheehy, producer of Spirit of Youth radio series on KSKA; Jessica Cochran, senior producer of APRN’s AK; and Sarah Gonzales join forces to connect Alaskans raising children in this geographically enormous state. Listeners are invited to participate in this call-in show on issues facing Alaska’s kids from infancy to young adulthood.

First episode: “Babes in the Woods” is all about getting outside with your children. Host Shana Sheehy speaks with in-studio guest, Jen Aist, author of Babes in the Woods: Hiking, Camping and Boating With Babies and Young Children.

Talk of the Nation: Is There a Sarah Palin Effect?

APRN’s Libby Casey is back in the NPR studios for Talk of the Nation with host Neal Conan and the Political Junkie, Ken Rudin Wednesday (Aug. 25) from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Former Governor Sarah Palin has endorsed Joe Miller, a Tea Party favorite. Miller is close to unseating incumbent Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski.  Republicans are encouraged to call-in and comment on “the Palin effect.” Does the endorsement make a difference?

Many absentee ballots in the Miller, Murkowski race remain uncounted. The winner will face Sitka Mayor, Scott McAdams in the general election on Novemeber 2. Listen for updated election results on Alaska News Nightly tonight at 6:00 pm.

Here’s the lineup for tonight’s (Thursday) presentation of RUNNINGKAKM and KSKA’s traditional meet-the-candidates forum for the primary election on August 24, 2010. Michael Carey hosts candidates running for U.S. House, U.S. Senate, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor beginning at 7:00 pm.

If you’ve got a TV handy, tune in to KAKM Channel 7 for the live televised event or stick with KSKA FM 91.1 for the live audio feed.

2PM Wednesday LIVE Coverage: Senator Stevens’ Funeral

Senator Stevens’ funeral will be broadcast live on KSKA FM 91.1 and KAKM Channel 7 TV beginning at 2:00 pm on Wednesday August 18. Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK),and U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-HI) are scheduled to speak at the funeral, which will be held at Anchorage Baptist Temple.

The Stevens family encourages members of the public to pay their respects Tuesday night (8/18) by lining the motorcade route as space at the temple will be limited on Wednesday.

Programming notes: Stevens funeral coverage will repeat tonight at 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Fresh Air can be heard  tonight at 11:00 pm on KSKA, but will not air today at 3:00 pm. KSKA’s Hometown, Alaska on Ballot Measure 2 has been rescheduled for Thursday (8/19)  at 2:00 pm.
