As the debate on health care form enters a critical stage in Congress, Dr. Oberlander joins Line One host, Dr. Woodard to discuss health care reform as it stands today.

Line One: Food Allergies

This week’s guest on Line One, Dr. Melinda Rathkopf, (right) takes a look food allergy. Line One: Exercise Physiology

Today’s guest on Line One, Dr. Michael Koehle (pictured right) examines the underlying mechanisms of environmental illnesses such as altitude, heat and decompression illness at the UBC Environmental Physiology Lab. Dr. Koehle is a physician trained in rural and remote medicine and sport medicine. He is also a physiologist specializing in exercise, respiratory and environmental physiology. Dr. Koehle joins host Dr. Woodard this week to discuss environmental physiology, focusing on the respiratory effects of exercise in cold weather.

According to the Center for Disease Control, insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions - such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression - which threaten our nation’s health. To discuss common sleep disorders including insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and sleep apnea, this week on Line One, host Dr. Woodard welcomes Dr. David Claman, director of the UCSF Sleep Disorders Center. Line One: Envision the Rhythms of Life

Sponsored by the National Institute of Health, Anchorage-based Mind Matters Research has been studying imagery as intervention since 2006. Led by Dr. Lyn Freeman, researchers work with breast cancer survivors to determine if an imagery program will improve quality of life. Entering Phase II of the study in September 2008, the “Envision the Rhythms of Life” Imagery Program will be delivered to 135 breast cancer survivors in Alaska and Seattle. This week on Line One, president of Mind Matters Research, Dr. Lyn Freeman joins host Dr. Woodard along with mind-body researcher, Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, lead consultant on the grant.

Line One: Hospice Care

Hospice is not a place, but a concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Eighty percent of hospice care is provided in the patient’s home, family member’s home and in nursing homes. At Amedisys Hospice in Anchorage, Buddhist ordained, Chaplain Diane Johnson incorporates aromatherapy and guided meditation with her patients. Today she joins Dr. Woodard on Line One, along with Hospice Medical Director, Dr. Sergei Bogojavlensky, and hospice RN, Crystal Walker.

Line One: Autism

It is estimated that 60 Alaskan children will be diagnosed as falling somewhere on the autism spectrum disorder continuum this year. National statistics put it at about 1 in 175 children. As April is Autism Awareness Month, today on Line One host Dr. Woodard welcomes Dr. Charles Cowan, pediatrician and clinical professor, specializing in autism disorders at the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
