KSKA, 91.9 in Girdwood

Tue, Feb 26, 2008

Concerned listeners in Girdwood, Alaska can be assured that FM 91.9 will soon return to the airwaves. The Girdwood translator went off this past Friday, February 22. KSKA’s engineers have been in contact with Telalaska and have determined the problem is at the translator site. Friday, KSKA’s contact at Alyeska informed us that there had been an avalanche close to the site and that they were working on clearing and grooming the area and that they would not be able to get us up to the site until this week. As of Tuesday, February 26 at 12:00 PM, KSKA’s lead engineer was on his way to Girdwood to work on restoring our KSKA translator. To all KSKA listeners in Girdwood - we apologize for this inconvenience, thank you for your patience, and hope to rejoin you on-air very soon.

KSKA signal at low power

Sun, Jan 27, 2008

Since this morning we have been experiencing frequent drop outs in our analog radio signal. As of 10:05 AM KSKA’s main transmitter went off-air. Currently, we are utilizing a back-up transmitter at low power operation. Engineers are continuing to work at KSKA’s transmitter site in Goose Bay in order to restore our full signal strength.  We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for patience and thanks for staying with us. For listeners with HD radios, KSKA’s HD signal appears to have been restored as of 11:00 AM.

Strong winds affecting radio signal

Sun, Dec 2, 2007

It appears as though we are experiencing some drop outs in our radio signal due to some very strong winds affecting transmitters at Goose Bay. The current weather forecast calls for strong wind through this evening. No adjustment to your radio is necessary. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for staying with us.

KSKA back at full power

Sat, Sep 29, 2007

After a few weeks of reduced signal during our HD Radio and analog transmitter upgrade, KSKA is once again operating at full power. While there might be some brief transmitting hiccups over the next several days as we settle in, the good news is that KSKA now reaches out its traditional broadcast footprint.

Thanks to everyone for staying with KSKA through this transition! We really do appreciate your patience and support for while this important work was done to give you better radio service.

We’ll have more HD Radio announcements in the months to come, but in the mean time, enjoy KSKA’s full-power signal from our new transmitter. And feel free to browse our transmitter upgrade photos.

Transmitter work almost done

Wed, Sep 26, 2007

kskatower.jpgGOOD NEWS — KSKA’s analog transmitter and digital HD Radio upgrade is on track and we’re almost ready to return to full power. It’s just a couple of days away now. Listen to KSKA or watch this site for further notification.

Our engineering team has been working especially hard to complete the project and ensure we’ve got a solid installation. As work has progressed, they’ve shot a few photos to share, and we’d like to share some with you now. Click any of the images below to jump over to a photo gallery on Flickr.

THANK YOU to everyone out there that has struggled with our limited signal strength over the last couple of weeks. We really appreciate your patience and understanding.

KSKA’s streaming service doubled

Thu, Sep 20, 2007

KSKA’s low power signal is still in effect as our HD Radio upgrades continue. So if your radio gets marginal reception when we’re at full power, you’re probably out of luck right now. We expect power to go back up to 100,000 watts by the end of the month.

An alternative? You can listen to KSKA’s signal via the Internet.

Historically, this has been a pretty constrained service that frustrated lots of listeners. A year ago we had only 25 streams available and were almost always busy. Until today, we had just 50 streams, and again we were fully subscribed during the day. As of this afternoon we’ve boosted our streaming service to 100 streams.

So if you’ve given up trying to use our streaming service in the past, we encourage you — especially if you’re having trouble listening to KSKA over the air — to try it again. You can learn more on our Listen Now page.

And let us know your thoughts about our KSKA stream by commenting below. Or feel free to contact us.

Out with the Old, In with the New

Tue, Sep 18, 2007

We’ve completed the first part of our transmitter upgrade project. Our old transmitter is being moved out and new ones moved in. We’re temporarily operating at low power as gear is positioned and tested in its final setup.

We’re still expecting KSKA’s signal to go back up to full power by the end of September, possibly sooner.

In the mean time, you might be interested to learn more about the new technology we’re bringing online soon: HD Radio. You can read more about HD Radio right here on our site — we have a quick overview and some FAQs related to our installation.

Thanks again for sticking around with KSKA during this transition. You are the best.
