Anchorage teens are joining the effort to make city parks fun and safe places to play. The city’s Youth Employment in Parks crew starts work on trails in University Lake Park this week and they will work in the other parks all summer.

A wildfire near Homer last month charred 1100 acres and completely destroyed three homes. What are the chances of a calamity like that in Anchorage, and what is the role of homeowners in protecting their property from wildfire? We’ll find out more about wildfire mitigation, and changing attitudes about suburban expansion into wild lands on the next Community Forum.

State budget restrictions have put construction of a new state crime laboratory on hold. But advocates say the old lab is inefficient and overwhelmed with a backload of cases, and that a new lab could be an effective tool in solving violent crimes. Join us for a discussion of how the lab works, its’ role in decreasing crime, and forensic evidence on this week’s Community Forum. Tom Livingston of Livingston Slone Architecture, who recently completed the design of the new lab joins host Ellen Lockyer, along with Karen Foster from Alaska Citizens For Justice.

Last week, city voters turned down a ballot initiative that would have provided about a million dollars for parks. To discuss how the funding rejection will affect the Parks and Recreation Department in Anchorage and the city wide program addressing future improvements to the park system, host Ellen Lockyer welcomes Beth Nordland and Suzanne Little from the Municipal Parks and Recreation Department.
