Congratulations to Pioneer Peak Elementary 5th grade teacher, Jackie Johnson, who was selected as Mat-Su Teacher of the Year 2010 by the Mat-Su Borough School District.

Alaskan Northen Lights: Young Alaskan Artists & Alaska’s Superintent of the Year

Congratulations to the winners of the Eleventh Annual Young Alaskan Artist Award to soprano, Elena Bird of Kenai and soprano, Sydnee Waggoner of Anchorage. And, the Alaska Association of School Administrators has announced Jim Hendrickson is Alaska’s Superintendent of the Year for 2010. Hendrickson has been Superintendent of the Bering Strait District since 2007.

Originally named “Bravo! Brava!,” we decided to rename these announcements recognizing starlets in our community to Alaskan Northern Lights.

Bravo! Brava!: National Merit Scholars

Congratulations to two more high school seniors from the Anchorage School District named winners of in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are:
- Elizabeth Conway of South High School
- Samuel Strobe of West High School
National Merit Scholars are evaluated on their academic records, test scores, leadership in school and community activities, essays, and letters of recommendation from their schools. Scholarship winners are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Bravo Elizabeth and Samuel!

An Alaska Air National Guardsmen, Major Roger LaBlanc was named the 2009 Alaska Distinguished Principal by the Alaska Association of Elementary School Principals.
Chosen for his outstanding leadership and commitment to improving the opportunities for students, teachers and the community as a whole, LaBlanc is the principal at Fairview Elementary School.
Major Roger LeBlanc will receive his award at the 2009 National Distinguished Principal program to be held this fall in Washington D.C.

Bravo! Brava!: Military Order of the Purple Heart

Today KSKA recognizes the Military Order of the Purple Heart, launching an extraordinary expedition today (Saturday) by America’s heroes to successfully summit Mt. Denali, after more than a year of intensive preparations.
You heard the team leader of Operation Denali, Lieutenant Colonel Marc Hoffmeister on KSKA back in 2007. In between tours, Lieutenant Hoffmeister moderated a panel of soldiers discussing their Iraq War experiences.
