Take a look at any photo of children from the 1950’s and can’t help but notice how few of the children are overweight compared to today. Is our current national struggle with obesity simply too much food and too little activity or is it more complex than this? Listen to Line One: Your Health Connection with Dr. Thad Woodard and his guest pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Henry Anhalt as they talk with you about the causes, treatment and ramifications of pediatric obesity on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Yupik Language books issued for parents of young children

Best Beginnings Alaska has just released three new early childhood development guides in Yupik. The goal is to provide Yupik speaking parents of very young children with books in their own language and containing culturally relevant activities.

Native student program in engineering proves successful

Even among all the new construction on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus, the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program’s canoe shaped building is an eye-catcher. But as APRN’s Ellen Lockyer discovered, even more unique than the building is the program itself.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan is banking on an Anchorage School District program aimed at preventing dropouts to serve as a model for school districts across the nation. This week on Hometown, Alaska, find out more about a new program designed to help Alaska Native students at risk of dropping out and to assist those who have already done so to earn their high school graduation requirements. ASD Superintendent, Carol Comeau and Doreen Brown from the ASD Indian Education Program join host Ellen Lockyer this afternoon at 2:00 pm on Hometown, Alaska.

Anchorage’s Native school proves popular

A year ago the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School was desperately recruiting students as staff prepared temporary classrooms in an Anchorage church. This year finds the school in permanent quarters and showing a robust enrollment.
