Addressing Alaskans: Republican Gubernatorial Debate

In their last public speaking opportunity before the primary election, Governor Sean Parnell, Ralph Samuels, and Bill Walker met for a Republican Gubernatorial debate at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage on Monday, August 23rd. Commonwealth North (CWN) hosted the debate, moderated by their president, Joe Beedle.
Structured similar to the Democratic Gubernatorial debate CWN hosted on August 5th, the first half of the program focused on fiscal policy, energy and health care. In the second half, candidates responded to audience questions on the Gulf Oil Spill and the drilling moratorium, ANWR, Pebble Mine, ACES, medicaid and education.

Vying for the democratic seat in the race for Alaska Governor, Senator Hollis French and Ethan Berkowitz met at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage on August 5th for a Democratic Gubernatorial Debate hosted by Commonwealth North. Retired judge, Karen Hunt moderated the debate which covered a variety of topics including fiscal policy, energy, health care, spurring investment in oil and gas industries in Alaska, Pebble Mine, ANWR, OCS development and small business ownership in Alaska.
Voters decide who will represent the democrats in the race for governor on August 24th.

Addressing Alaskans: Observations from the Walrus Islands in Bristol Bay

Terry Johnson, a professor with the University of Alaska Seagrant Marine Advisory Program has been taking ecotour groups to the to view walrus populations in Bristol Bay for over decade. Based on his first-hand observations, Johnson shared his “Notes and Observations from the Walrus Island of Bristol Bay” at a Wildlife Wednesday lecture hosted by Alaska Zoo.

Before heading up to Denali and Talkeetna for prime bird watching, the host and producer of Encounters, Richard Nelson stopped in Anchorage to meet some of his biggest fans and talk about how Encounters on Raven Radio in Sitka came to be. On Friday May 14 hundreds of Alaskans gathered inside and out the Campbell Creek Science Center to hear Richard Nelson speak about recording in the wild and “Listening to Alaska.”

Creators of the initiative are calling it the “Anti-Corruption Act.” Meanwhile opponents of Proposition 1 have dubbed it the “Alaska Gag Law.” No matter what we call it, Alaskans will vote on Proposition 1 this August 24. On this week’s Addressing Alaskans, KSKA presents a panel discussion hosted by the Resource Development Council on May 6th with opposing sides on Proposition 1.

After a 26 year career in the federal government intelligence and law enforcement communities, John Cassara is considered an expert in anti-money laundering and terrorist financing. In his talk,” Terrorist Financing: The War Behind the War on Terror” recorded at the Alaska World Affairs Council on April 23rd, Cassara focuses on areas of money laundering in the Middle East, the growing threat of alternative remittance systems and forms of trade-based money laundering.

Addressing Alaskans: Killer Asteroids

Ever wonder what is fact versus fiction when watching the infamous Star Wars trilogy? February through April Alaskans poured into Anchorage Museum to learn more about the science and imagination behind Stars Wars. In addition various interactive Stars Wars exhibits, the museum hosted the Jedi Night Lecture Series. The series concluded with UAA Astronomer, Andy Puckett who spoke on “Killer Asteroids: How We Know What We know.”

Addressing Alaskans: Planning to Keep Big, Wild Life in Anchorage

Wildlife biologist, Rick Sinnott has been studying and interacting with Anchorage moose, bears, birds, foxes, coyotes and wolves for over thirty years. From DNA sampling bears to putting GPS collars on wolves and moose, Sinnott discusses how he tracks Anchorage’s animal populations for urban planning purposes. Most Alaskans agree wildlife adds to the quality of life, which is why Sinnott aims for “Planning to Keep Big, Wild Life in Anchorage.”

Before the legislative session in Juneau comes to a close, on April 1 at a lunch hosted by Commonwealth North, Governor Sean Parnell provided an update on the session and discussed his two major initiatives for Alaska – economic security and positioning Alaska’s families for success. The Governor’s talk also touches on cruise ship head tax, LNG, AGIA and domestic violence in Alaska.

Addressing Alaskans: America’s Russia Problem

Weeks before the United States signed the recent Arms Control Treaty with Russia, the Alaska World Affairs Council in collaboration with Anchorage Opera hosted Mel Goodman who spoke on “America’s Russia Problem” at a weekly AWAC luncheon on February 5th. Former State Department and senior CIA Soviet analyst, Mel Goodman is a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy. Author of six books on national security, Goodman has also taught national security issues at the National War College, Johns Hopkins and the American University.
