At about 9:30 this morning, the body of Senator Ted Stevens arrived at All
Saints Episcopal Church for a public visitation to begin at 10:00 a.m. and
continue until 8:00 this evening.

The cadence of the military honor guard slowly brought Steven’s body from
the hearse, past the over two dozen, black garbed family members and after a
brief prayer at the entrance, into the church.

The visitation line outside the church began forming before 9 o’clock. At
the head of it, was Michael Monger, who drove up this morning from Soldotna.

the body of Senator Ted Stevens from All Saints Episcopal Church to the

The funeral service honoring former Senator Ted Stevens is scheduled for Wednesday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. His family released the details today, calling them preliminary. His funeral will take place at the Anchorage Baptist Temple, where Stevens attended Sunday Service on August 1, just eight days before he was killed in a plane crash near Dillingham. At that service, Stevens stood on stage with Pastor Jerry Prevo. Stevens talked to the congregation about what he had been doing since leaving the Senate in 2008.

Senator Stevens will also be lying in repose at All Saints Episcopal Church in downtown Anchorage. The family is inviting the public to pay their respects between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the North to The Future Foundation, which was established to honor Stevens’ career.

Leadership Circle Frequently Asked Questions

The Leadership Circle recognizes individuals, couples, families and businesses who have the vision and desire to support Alaska Public Telecommunications, Inc. (APTI) in a substantial way: those who know that excellence never happens by accident, that it takes careful planning, dedicated effort, and the commitment of charitable donors.

How can I become a part of the APTI Leadership Circle?

A cumulative donation of $1,000 or more within a calendar year qualifies you as a Leadership Circle member.

A summary of your donations for tax purposes is sent to you each January.

What are the giving levels of the Leadership Circle?

Leadership Circle $1,000-$4,999

Leadership Circle Visionaries $5,000-$9,999

Leadership Circle President’s Society $10,000+

What are the benefits of membership in the APTI Leadership Circle?

Satisfaction in knowing that you are helping ensure that trusted, unbiased, authentic, in-depth, commercial-free public radio and television programming continues in Southcentral Alaska.

On-air acknowledgment of your support on KSKA (with your permission) as a Leadership Circle Member.

Your day on KSKA – your approved message aired five times during one KSKA broadcast day during the calendar year. You may use your message to recognize a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or special event. Go to KSKA.org/support/kskaday/ to reserve your day.

Station tour of the KSKA, KAKM and APRN facilities upon request.

Invitations to special events at the station and in the community, as available. Unless otherwise stated, these events are complimentary – in appreciation of your strong support of APTI.

What are the advantages of becoming a Sustaining Leadership Circle Member?

Leadership Circle members may also be Sustaining Members. Sustaining Members agree to make an ongoing monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual donation as a pledge of support. Your donations can be charged automatically to your credit or debit card.

Sustaining Membership automatically renews each year, eliminating renewal notices and reducing APTI’s mailings and phone calls. Changes or cancellation can be made at any time simply by calling 550-8400.

Do I need to designate my donation to KAKM television or KSKA radio?

No, but you may if you wish. Undesignated gifts to APTI are devoted to the highest priorities of the organization as directed by the board of directors. Designated gifts to either KAKM or KSKA are devoted to those operations in accordance with donor intent. We are pleased to honor your preferences and, through your generosity, we are able to support a broad mission of public service to the community.

At this year’s Alaska Press Club Awards, APTI (KSKA, APRN, KAKM) took home a total of 5 journalism awards.

Libby Casey, our Washington DC correspondent for APRN, took first place in Best Reporting on Crime or Courts for “Supreme Court Hears Weyrauch Case.” The judge in this category wrote: “Solid focus to a controversial incident that is surprisingly complex. Libby Casey puts an Alaska political corruption story into a national context, and gives listeners insights into how current court justices deliberate the vagaries of law. Libby Casey is a Nina Totenburg in the making.” Libby also took second place in “Best Government or Political Reporting” for “Begich Won’t Step Down.”

Annie Feidt of APRN took first place for “Best Arts Coverage” for “Aniak raises the curtain.” The judge in this category wrote: “Annie Feidt takes an unconventional approach to a conventional Alaska story about a small town’s holiday school play. Great character development and story structure come together through nice writing to convey a sense of community. Feidt quotes the school choir director saying the principal ‘creates great theater with kids.’ Feidt has done the same for radio listeners.” Annie also took third place for “Best Sports Reporting” for “Iditarod Rookies.”

Kristin Spack of KSKA took second place in the category of Best Ongoing Public Affairs Program for “Addressing Alaskans,” our series of broadcasts of public affairs presentations made at various events around the region. (First place in this category went to KMXT/Kodiak’s Jay Barrett for “The Alaska Fisheries Report,” which airs on APRN.)

Hooray for APRN and KSKA public radio!

And more than 65,000 Alaskans stretch their food dollars with federal Food Stamps. But new ways of meeting nutritional needs in tight times are surfacing around Alaska. In Igiugig, a village near Lake Iliamna, a young tribal council president leads her village toward creating a sustainable food supply – like the 450 pounds of potatoes they just harvested, and fresh eggs from community chickens. Now, they’re building a year-round greenhouse to grow community food and sell produce to local lodges. This week on Hometown, Alaska Kathleen McCoy hosts Food Bank of Alaska executive director, Susannah Morgan and Americorps volunteer, Kelly Ingram to scope out the challenge, and some of the creative solutions, of feeding hungry Alaskans.

Reserving Your Day on KSKA is a great way to celebrate a special person or event in your life. Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary or in memory of someone, KSKA will help you honor that day when you become a KSKA Day Sponsor.

Here’s how:

1. Pledge Your Support
A contribution of $500 or more to KSKA will allow you to choose your day on KSKA. Your pledge must be paid in full or be part of an active automatic payment program with APTI before we can process your KSKA Day Sponsorships.

2. Select Your Day
To make your day truly special, only one KSKA Day Sponsor will air per day. Therefore, we ask that you indicate a first and second date choice. We will confirm the date with you before your announcements air on FM 91.1. If your first choice is not available, we will reserve the date of your second choice. If your first date choice isn’t available and you don’t indicate a second choice, we’ll choose one for you.

Check the Availability of your Date:

Click here to view the current 2010-11 KSKA DAY Calendar

3. Select an Introduction
The KSKA Day Sponsor announcement, including the introduction cannot exceed :15 seconds. The introduction is :03 seconds.

Here are your choices for an introduction:

Today’s broadcast is supported by a generous gift from (your name) in honor of:

Today’s broadcast is supported by a generous gift from (your name) to celebrate:

Today’s broadcast is supported by a generous gift from (your name) in memory of:

Today’s broadcast is supported by a generous gift from (your name) to celebrate the life of:

Your message should time out to :15 seconds. So, in 30 words or less indicate the person’s name or event to be honored and a brief statement indicating the reason for message. KSKA staff may edit your message for length and content. When submitting copy, please include clear, phonetic pronunciations of names in your message.

4. Listen to KSKA on Your Day
KSKA staff will voice your announcement and schedule them to air five times during the day of your choice. Weekdays, the announcements air at: 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Weekends the announcements will air at: 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Terms and Conditions

The purpose of the KSKA Day Sponsorship is to acknowledge people or special events such as anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, weddings, holidays, etc. Pet names, business names, and non-profit events and fundraisers are acceptable. However, advertising, or expressions of ideological, theological or political opinions are not acceptable.

KSKA Day Sponsorship must be scheduled, paid for and completed within one calendar year. KSKA must receive your Day Sponsor messages no later than five days prior to the reserved day. If we have not received your message by airtime, we will provide a generic message that reads, “Today’s broadcast is supported by a generous gift from (your name)”

Unforeseen schedule changes, breaking news and/or technical difficulties may alter your announcement day or times. We will work with you in these occasions to honor the spirit of your message and your reserved day.

A note from KSKA’s Program Director, Bede Trantina:

Thank you so much for calling and writing to KSKA sharing your thoughts on the new program schedule. Our special Community Forum call-in with you on July 22nd went by so fast. Pat Yack, VP of APTI’s News and Public Media and I talked to 18 callers and read 10 of your emails with another 30 emails and web comments coming in after the show was over. As a follow up to our January 21st show, you gave us valuable feedback and wonderful comments about KSKA’s program changes to craft a schedule you helped create.

Your feedback on Community Forum on July 22 ranged from wanting to hear the loss of daylight after summer solstice, to inquiring about vintage programs, to encouraging better promotion of shows both on and off the air. We heard you ask that shows that were taken off to make room for the new shows be brought back. And, you asked us to explain the opportunities and limitations that are part of the process of making program changes.

Some of your requests were fairly easy to implement – like announcing the loss of daylight in our weather casts or giving more timely information in program promos. Others recommendations, such as moving Fresh Air back to 9:00a.m. is a bigger decision. Of the 58 responses to KSKA’s new program schedule, 13 requested Fresh Air return to 9:00 a.m. It was listener feedback and ongoing discussions in the community advisory council that prompted Fresh Air’s move. Incorporating your requests to find daily, news programming utilizing diverse resources played a big role in selecting Here and Now from BBC/WGBH – Boston at 9:00a.m. following Morning Edition. We also heard you ask that Fresh Air be given another opportunity to be heard other than during the day. In finalizing the March lineup, KSKA’s mission, identity, demands on operation and engineering resources, budget, network broadcast agreements and sustainability were also taken into consideration.

One of the great things about programming for radio is nothing is in stone. The opportunity to make bigger program changes will surface next year and, once again your comments will be used to make thoughtful programming decisions. We appreciate you sharing your passion for KSKA with us.

We heard from many of you. Here are some of your comments:

Fresh Air: move it back to 9a.m. / keep it at 11p.m. / tell listeners they can hear it online

Weather: include both the gain and loss of daylight

Public Service Announcements: do more

This American Life: move it from Saturdays at 10a.m. / keep it on Saturday at 10a.m

Travel with Rick Steves: really like the show / not a fan of the show

Calling All Pets: really miss it / glad it’s gone

Consider repeating: Car Talk, Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell me!

Consider bringing back: Alternative Radio, Whad’Ya Know, Only a Game

Consider adding: vintage shows, Democracy Now, National Press Club, Sylvia Rimm, Diane Rehm, a show for teens

Reconsider: Friday’s music line up/ People’s Pharmacy / putting Marketplace and Tech Nation back to old times / so much medical programming

Encounters: one hour block is great / one hour block is too much

Hispanic programming: lose it / love it, listens with the family

Soul to Soul: don’t ever take it away / not a fan of soul music

BBC: loves the added BBC programs / now there’s too much BBC

Alaska World Affairs Council Presents: enjoys it

Thank you for your input helping us make KSKA the best it can be.
