Anchorage groups rally for immigration reform

Stage Talk: The Secret Garden / Last Frontier Theatre Conference

Some of the youngest actors now performing in Alaska, Alora Zulliger and Tyler Smith from Valley Performing Arts join host Mark Muro on Stage Talk this week to talk about their upcoming production of The Secret Garden. Like Alora and Tyler many of the attendees to the Last Frontier Theatre Conference got their start in community theater in Alaska. Conference coordinator, Ryan Buen is also on Stage Talk this week to talk about this year’s eighth annual conference coming up on May 16 – 23 in Valdez.

Census prepares for house to house counting

Next Monday marks the next step in the U.S. Census count. On May 3rd, some 13 hundred enumerators throughout Alaska will start going to housing units that did not respond to the mailed questionnaires.

Addressing Alaskans: Killer Asteroids

Ever wonder what is fact versus fiction when watching the infamous Star Wars trilogy? February through April Alaskans poured into Anchorage Museum to learn more about the science and imagination behind Stars Wars. In addition various interactive Stars Wars exhibits, the museum hosted the Jedi Night Lecture Series. The series concluded with UAA Astronomer, Andy Puckett who spoke on “Killer Asteroids: How We Know What We know.”

ACLU charges homeless camp seizures unconstitutional

Today the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska filed a suit against the Municipality of Anchorage. The suit seeks to stop any further campsite raids where authorities can seize and destroy the property of the homeless. Just before filing, ACLU explained its case outside the Superior Court building in Anchorage.

Duffy resigns as Mat-Su manager

Matanuska Susitna Borough manager John Duffy has resigned his post. Duffy’s move surprised the Borough Assembly, who received Duffy’s resignation letter late Tuesday evening. As KSKA’s Ellen Lockyer reports, the resignation comes on the heels of allegations regarding a utility contract at the new Goose Creek Correctional Facility.

What does it take to become an entrepreneur?
Challenging economic times give birth to the entrepreneurs among us. On today’s Hometown, Alaska, two experts join host Kathleen McCoy to talk about Alaska’s climate for raising up innovators of the Next Big Thing.
We’ll talk to 17-year-old CEO Tyler Arnold of Anchorage, who isn’t going to college next year. Instead, he’ll be running his global IT services company from right here in Anchorage.
We’ll also talk with Allan Johnston, who proudly boasts the title of “Chief Encouragement Officer” for The Entrepreneurs and Mentors Network Inc., a not for profit corporation that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship in Alaska. Johnston is a key mover behind the Alaska Business Plan Competition, which just named its winners on April 24.
