How important is vitamin D to our health? How can those of us in Alaska be sure were are getting enough of this vitamin whose primary source is sunlight? Dr. Woodard, If this question hasn’t been asked… When you get a blood test for Vitamin D, what should your optimum level be?
Also, because vitamin D is fat soluble, why can’t you get an overdose of it in your body?
What is the very best way to obtain Vitamin D? Are there ways to avoid?
Sorry to pepper you with questions, but I take a product called Viactiv for bone health. It has 500 units of Vitamin D per chew. It suggests that you chew two per day. Is this a good source of Vitamin D. Also, is there something that we might eat that prevents Vitamin D from being absorbed?
I appreciate the topic tonight as I agree most of us, especially Alaskans, do not realize how vitamin D deficient we are. I started taking supplements last winter and it has really improved my mood and overall health. I would like to add that “fortified” foods with vitamin d are not always the best practice. I have found that many fresh foods have traces of vitamin d, but we are still not getting enough form our diets. This is the one supplement we need. My kids readily take the liquid drops daily while my wife and I a pill once a week that contains 50,000 IU of vitamin d. Both can be found at Avante Medical Center on Northern Lights Blvd.
