Municipality Introduces “Language Line” for Non-English Speaking Domestic Violence Victims

Addressing Alaskans: U.S. – Iranian Relations in the Age of Obama

Examining U.S. – Iranian relations from an anthropological perspective, Dr. William Beeman shares a point a view you might have not considered in the past. He contends there is no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapons and the United States needs to begin treating Iran with the respect they deserve. A country larger than the state of Alaska, Beeman describes Iran’s diverse cultural and geographical makeup and responds to questions from the audience on how to proceed with U.S. – Iranian relations in the future. The President of the Middle East Section of the American Anthropological Association, Dr. Beeman was recorded addressing the Alaska World Affairs Council on Friday, October 23.

Public hearing shows wide response to proposed 2010 budget

The second half of last night’s Anchorage Assembly meeting was pretty much devoted to a series of public hearings on 2010 budget issues. The testimony was largely divided between angry property tax payers and those seeking to protect city services and grant support.

Hometown, Alaska: Architecture of our new major buildings

Anchorage has recently added a museum expansion, a convention center, a University library, and a number of Midtown office buildings. Each new building helps define the urban landscape of our city. We’ll ask what you think of these new buildings, and talk about how they fit in with design and planning concepts for northern cities. Assembly resolution could draw mayoral veto

Anchorage’s proposed 2010 municipal budget dominated last night’s assembly meeting. But before the public even got a chance to voice its response to the 420 million dollar plus budget, assembly members divided over two revenue issues.
