Programming on public radio is always changing. Faced with the loss of some good shows earlier this year, we took to the air in January and asked you to tell us what you want to hear on KSKA. In March, we incorporated your ideas into a new program line up. And now we’re back to ask, what do you think? Do you like what you hear? How can we make KSKA even better?
Join us for the next special edition of Community Forum on Wednesday at 2:00 pm when Pat Yack, Vice President of News and Public Media and Bede Trantina, KSKA’s Program Director will be on the air taking your calls and listening to you. You can call, e-mail, post comments below or even “tweet” with us during the program (details below). You hear from us everyday. Wednesday we want to hear from you!

When the programing changed in March it felt like I had lost my best friend.
Please restore the BBC full hour of news at 11:00PM
Re. KSKA program changes…
I heard an earlier compliant about the rescheduling of “Fresh Air” from 9 am to 11 pm. Actually, I REALLY LIKE having “Fresh Air” at 11 pm. I am usually unable to listen to it during the day, and it’s a perfect way to end my day after “The Daily Show” and the “Colbert Report”. I listen to it just before I go to sleep. This is one of the best changes you’ve made in the schedule!
I am also glad you got rid of some of the mediocre programming that used to be on at night. I never listed to KSKA in the evenings before the schedule changes.
Thanks!
Carol Klein
Dear KAKM
Your programming lineup is good. My problem
Occasionally there is a 1 or 2 min. break between programs. The music played during those blank periods is often VERY grating – grating to the extent that I change the dial to another station.
Maybe you could pass on this complaint to whoever it is that selects the music for those breaks in programming.
Please … no rap, no discordant cutting edge work, just some nice insturmental music would be an improvment.
Thanks

Regarding ethnic/minority programmimg..
There is a lot of Hispanic programming on weekends, and they are a large segment of our community..but rather than weekly Hispanic, coould you not given other minority culture/linguistic groups “shots at Sunday programs… min it up a bit? We have three to five Alaska Native linguistic-cultural groups here;; a strong Korean community, a Micronesian community, a Filipino community.. how about sharing the Sunday minority and lingustic slots among all of them, rather than just setting it aside for the Hispanic community?/ Thanks!
Hey Bede! Great to hear you in the afternoon. It’s been a long day for you by now. As for programming, I miss “Whaddaya Know” Where’d it go? Also, what’s the status of volunteer training and live record shows from new voices? Putting Shonti and Betsy opposite Heimel on Sunday afternoons is tough as well. Thanks. John
Like the new programming including the international news. Appreciate the Rick Steeves traveling offering on Saturday afternoon and especially since KAKM quit providing the traveling programs.
If additional time for other programs or repeats, the duplication of “A Prairie Home Companion” in similar time frames could be eliminated.
Hello Bede,
Please return BBC radio to the 11pm-midnight time. Before the schedule change I truly enjoyed listening to BBC on KSKA. It was a perfect ending to my day.
Last winter when the new schedule was promoted I was really excited about the increase in International Radio shows on KSKA. Unfortunately I am not awake for the 12am-5am International Radio shows.
Thanks for all of your efforts.
Sharron
Thank all of you for your comments.
We received more than two dozens calls and emails regarding our Community Forum last week. We very much appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts.
Thank you for listening to KSKA. You are family to us and we value the relationship.
Some general responses:
- Many of you would like to see us do a better job of promoting upcoming shows. We heard that loud and clear, so we will work on this. We will seek additional opportunities to tell you what’s coming up – and we will be as specific as we can.
- Some of you would like to see Fresh Air returned to mornings. We are going to hold off for now as we want to let this schedule sink in some more. Moving Fresh Air back to the mornings would create a domino effect and we want to avoid that right now.
- Some programs were eliminated. Whad’ya Know was among them. Any time you add new shows, some old ones have to be eliminated. Whad’ya Know is one of my personal favorites, so I can understand the sense of loss when one of our favorite shows disappears.
- As is the case with a number of programs – our music offerings draw mixed reviews. However, we are happy we can offer a broad range of music on the weekends, and we especially appreciate having the chance to reach out to our Spanish-speaking neighbors. Regarding other music, we are certainly happy to give a listen to see how we could include programs down the road.
- On the topic of music: We choose the music that is played between shows and before, after and during local shows. The music played between segments of a national show is selected by the show’s producers.
Thank you again for listening. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us.
