A Closer Look: Debtor’s Rights

bills3Today KSKA introduces A Closer Look, a half hour program that allows us to present in more depth either that background of our news stories or to profile often unrecognized people performing special work in our community.

On the first Closer Look, we presented the complete interview that formed the basis for a story on Debtors Rights broadcast on KSKA and Alaska Public Radio Network’s Alaska News Nighty.

The interview was with Jim Davis, an attorney with the Northern Justice Project and a pro bono volunteer for Alaska Legal Services. Davis’ specialty is debtors’ rights. He had come to the Fairview Recreational Center on a Friday evening to conduct a Debtors’ Rights workshop sponsored by Alaska Legal Services.

I am shocked that KSKA would devote any time at all to a program like today’s Closer Look: Debtor’s Rights. How much did Mr. Davis contribute to get such a nice long infomercial? And is it the position of KSKA to equate debt collectors as “sleeze beyond sleeze”? If people owe a debt, it is their responsibility to pay it. I pay mine. It’s called buckling down, pinching pennies, working hard and living within your means. They SHOULD feel embarassed that they charged too many Coach purses to the credit card and now society is picking up the tab. Have you paid any attention to the troubles of today’s economy? It takes ten people’s tax money to support one person’s stupidity – who will support the rest of us when there is no more accountability and our nation unravels? It’s honest people who pay their bills and volunteer their time who are contributers to your membership drives… if this program reflects how you feel about us, then don’t count on my donation (it’ll all be paying for other people’s utility bills and I’ll be too busy working a third job to call in).
