The runoff election for Anchorage’s next mayor is on Tuesday, May 5th. Before everyone returns to the polls, we’ve invited the two remaining candidates back to the KSKA/KAKM studios for a special edition of RUNNING. You heard short interviews with all fifteen candidates running for mayor back in April. In this special edition of RUNNING, Anchorage Edition’s Michael Carey and KSKA’s Len Anderson conduct separate, in-depth, 30 minute interviews with the two remaining candidates – Dan Sullivan and Eric Croft.

In today’s  ever-changing media environment, he explains how teaching young journalists continues to evolve with the profession.  Today, Mr. Yack is the Vice President of News and Public Affairs at Alaska Public Telecommuncations Inc. (KSKA/KAKM/APRN’s parent company). Recorded April 17th in Anchorage, he speaks on The Fall of Foreign Journalism in the American Press.

Community Forum: State Crime Lab

setupthumbState budget restrictions have put construction of a new state crime laboratory on hold. But advocates say the old lab is inefficient and overwhelmed with a backload of cases, and that a new lab could be an effective tool in solving violent crimes. Join us for a discussion of how the lab works, its’ role in decreasing crime, and forensic evidence on this week’s Community Forum. Tom Livingston of Livingston Slone Architecture, who recently completed the design of the new lab joins host Ellen Lockyer, along with Karen Foster from Alaska Citizens For Justice.

Alaska Radio Reader Rambler: Anchorage Musuem Expansion and Reopening

goldOn Saturday May 30, the Anchorage Museum will reopen and kick off more than a year’s worth of expansion related changes. The Anchorage Museum will open its new wing with an outrageous traveling exhibit called Gold. Included in the Gold exhibit admission pass, visitors can see two world premieres of Alaska plays, including The Gilded Tusk by Anchorage playwright Joan Kane. Joan joins hosts Sandy and Dick, along with the director of her play, Ron Holstrom and Sarah Henny from the Anchorage Museum on this month’s edition of Alaska Radio Reader Rambler.

RUNNING: Before the runoff

It’s Dan Sullivan versus Eric Croft in the runoff election for Anchorage’s next mayor on Tuesday, May 5. Does either mayoral candidate have a definite plan to lessen the property tax burden? What would they do to make our streets safer? How will they hold down government spending and at the same time, invest in the city?

Find out the answer to these questions and more when RUNNING returns on KAKM, Channel 7 Public TV and KSKA, FM 91.1 with mayoral candidates Eric Croft and Dan Sullivan. Anchorage Edition’s Michael Carey and KSKA’s Len Anderson will interview the two candidates Thursday, April 30 beginning at 8:00 pm. Listen on KSKA, FM 91.1 or watch on KAKM, Channel 7.

School district prepares for swine flu cases

With a responsibility for more than 48 thousand students, the Anchorage School District spent yesterday working on its plans for the probable appearance of the swine influenza now appearing elsewhere in the country. In the evening, the district issued a statement to students, families and staff.

KSKA off-air briefly tonight

radio-towerKSKA’s engineering staff will be working out at Goose Bay this evening (Monday) to replace equipment for KSKA, FM 91.1 and KAKM Channel 7 television transmission. KSKA will be off the air for a few hours after midnight to accommodate the engineering work. We apologize for the inconvernience and thank you for your patience.

Line One: Hospice Care

Hospice is not a place,  but a concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Eighty percent of hospice care is provided in the patient’s home, family member’s home and in nursing homes. At Amedisys Hospice in Anchorage,  Buddhist ordained, Chaplain Diane Johnson incorporates aromatherapy and guided meditation with her patients. Today she joins Dr. Woodard on Line One, along with Hospice Medical Director, Dr. Sergei Bogojavlensky, and hospice RN, Crystal Walker.
