New KSKA schedule launches Monday

KSKA’s broadcast schedule is changing this coming Monday, March 2. Here’s where you can learn more:

- 36% of kids in Anchorage Schools are overweight, as was revealed in a new study
- Alaska legislators may get a pay raise to more than $50,000 annually, a boost of about 100%, though they would lose their per diem benefit
- The 90-day legislative session is extremely tight

Fur Rondy street closings

Beginning Friday, anyone going to downtown Anchorage should remember some streets will be closed for the World Championship Dog Races and other Fur Rondy events.
- Friday through Sunday, 4th Avenue between I and Cordova Streets, and Cordova Street from 4th to 16th Avenues will be closed for the World Championship Sled Dog Races.
- On Saturday, from 7:30 to 11 AM, 5th and 6th Avenues between H and Eagle Streets will be closed for the Frostbite Race.
- Also on Saturday from 10 AM to 12 PM, 5th and 6th Avenues between K and C Streets will be closed for the Grand Parade.
During the Frostbite Race and the Grand Parade, People Mover will have limited access and there will be restricted routes to the 5th Avenue Parking Garage and the JCPenny Parking Garage. Motorists should expect limited access on surrounding streets.
AWAC Presents: John Hamilton, U.S. foreign service

A career officer in the U.S. Foreign Service for 35 years, John Hamilton was ambassador to Peru from 1999 – 2002 and to Guatemala from 2002 – 2005. In late 2000, the regime of Alberto Fujimori of Peru imploded over a crisis of political corruption. Hamilton tells the story of “What Embassies Do in Crisis: The Fall of the Fujimori Regime in Peru,” describing his one-on-one diplomatic relations with the authoritarian president. Responding to questions from the audience, Hamilton shares his thoughts on U.S. – Latin Relations at the outset of the Obama administration.

Alaska Radio Reader Rambler: Make Good the Fires

Today is the first in a special Alaska Radio Reader Rambler series celebrating the history of Alaska with five world premiers of new plays especially written by Alaska playwrights on Alaska themes. The first one, Make Good the Fires based on the story of Lena Morrow Lewis and socialism in early Alaska, opens March 13th at Cyrano’s. Host Steve Heimel, chats with the playwright, Arlitia Jones and the director, Bostin Christopher.

Anchorage chooses first series of recovery projects

Yesterday Acting Mayor Matt Claman announced an initial series of projects Anchorage will submit directly to the federal government as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, popularly known as the Stimulus Package.
