Anchorage Edition: Jan 30, 2009
Fri, Jan 30, 2009
Each week, host Michael Carey gathers journalists and commentators for a review of the week’s news, politics and public affairs in Anchorage and Alaska. Topics this week include:
- Governor Sarah Palin’s State of the State address summary – hiring freeze, budget cuts, TransCanada gas line remains top priority, education increases – legislature and constituent response
- Palin forms her own Political Action Committee. Why? Is the media making too much it?
- Connocco Phiilips, Shell and Exxon report huge losses. What does this mean for the Permanent Fund and oil exploration in the coming season?
- Governor Palin talks big projects, code for Susitna Dam? The Susitna Hydroelectric Project, (commonly called the Susitna Dam) has been put on hold since the 1980’s. As renewable energy becomes increasingly appealing, price tag will ultimately determine support for the project.
- Not suprisingly, Acting Mayor Matt Clamant announces he’s running for mayor, adding his name to the pool of ten, or eleven? How many more will join the race? Or drop out?
- Alaska is about to receive some stimulus money from President Obama – job creation expected and various project proposals.
- Energy subsidies, energy problems in the Bush, energy caps on prices – how do we solve the problems of high priced energy in Alaska? Senator Lyman Hoffman (D-Bethel) suggests we place a ceiling on the cost of fuel, providing an energy rebate for anyone who has to pay more than $3.00 per gallon.

Do bears have a place in Alaska’s biggest city?
Thu, Jan 29, 2009
Bears, salmon and their place in “Anchorage’s Big, Wild Life” is the focus of a special panel discussion taking place tomorrow. It’s a topic that’s come up at the Anchorage Assembly in recent months, but organizers from the Waterways Council say they want to keep tomorrow’s discussion more ecological than political.

AWAC Presents: Eric Brown
Thu, Jan 29, 2009
Eric Brown is the co-founder and CEO of Impact Games, which uses video games to engage people in current events and world affairs. Impact’s flagship game, PeaceMaker, a simulation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict challenges players to emerge as leaders, ultimately bringing peace to the Middle East or plunging the region into disaster. In 2007 at the International Peace Summit in Annapolis, 100,000 copies of PeaceMaker were distributed to Israel and the West Bank. Another Impact game, Play the News, changes news consumption from passive to active engagement.
Listed among 100 Social Entrepreneurs Changing the World in Newsweek Japan, Eric Brown founded Impact Games to influence society and promote change. In his talk, Brown previews various video games attempting to educate and motivate players, asking listeners to consider, can video games promote peace? What do you think?

Redoubt updates on KSKA
Wed, Jan 28, 2009

Mount Redoubt, located on the western side of Cook Inlet has been experiencing tremors for the past three days and the Alaska Volcano Observatory is alert level WATCH for a possible eruption. According to the AVO, the volcano activity has declined somewhat since yesterday afternoon, but the current activity at Redoubt could be a sign of eruption, perhaps within days. The Office of Emergency Management reminds citizens to be prepared for all hazards that Anchorage faces, including volcanic ash fall. At this time there has not been an eruption. The AVO and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are monitoring the situation around the clock and we will keep you updated on volcano Redoubt on KSKA.
