Dr. Bruce Switzer and Lorna Shaw answer questions from voters on ballot measure 4

With the Alaska primary election tomorrow less than a week away, a public forum on ballot measures 3 and 4 seemed our one last hope for clarity before the big vote on August 26. Hosted by Alaska Common Ground at the Wilda Marston Theatre, KSKA brings you opposing perspectives on each ballot measure. In the first half of the forum, Tim June, Chair of Alaskans for Clean Elections, insists Alaskans follow in the footsteps of many other states by opting for publicly funded elections in order to eliminate political corruption. While the idea of “Clean Elections” sounds nice, attorney at law, Ken Jacobus contests, it will not produce a single positive change in Alaska politics or elections.

In the second half of the program, Dr. Bruce Switzer and Lorna Shaw argue ballot measure 4, perhaps the hottest polictical topic, and the most expensive in this primary season. Senior advisor to Alaskans for Clean Water, Bruce Switzer says the initiative was written to “stop Pebble Mine,” while the executive director of the Council for Alaska Producers, Lorna Shaw, fears a mining shutdown if the initiative becomes a law.

As of 3:20 PM on August 25, KSKA has updated the language used in our introduction in the wake of the state’s decision to eliminate the word “clean” from any references to any of the initiatives.

Tiffany — We do not provide transcripts for any of our radio products at this time. We hope to at some point in the future, but to date, we haven’t had the funding in place to provide that service.
