While there is as yet no over-arching theory to explain all instances of Savant Syndrome, more progress has been made in better understanding this condition in the past 15 years, than in the prior 100. In his book, Extraordinary People: Understanding the Savant Syndrome Dr. Darold Treffert defines Savant Syndrome as a “rare, but extraordinary, condition in which persons with serious mental disabilities, including autistic disorder, have some ‘island of genius’ that stands in marked, incongruous contrast to overall handicap.” Dr. Darold Treffert has studied Savant Syndrome as a psychiatrist for over 35 years and is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert on this extraordinary condition. Today on Line One with Dr. Woodard, Darold Treffert shares his findings and takes your questions .
