The U.S. spends twice as much as other industrialized nations on health care, yet our system performs poorly in comparison. How would you be treated in a Canadian emergency room versus one in the US.? While you might pay less, how would the treatment and “wait time” differ? President of the Canadian Medical Association, Dr. Brian Day joins Dr. Woodard from Toronto to give us a better understanding of the Canadian health care system.

A doctor friend of mine at Providence here in Anchorage commented that “end of life” costs are extraordinary in the American system. I understand that many people are willing to try any treatment to extend the lives of loved ones, but it is often expensive for very little improvement in the quality of life or comfort of the patient nearing death. I wonder if Dr. Brian Day could comment on the Canadian take on this subject, and if education of the public may make a difference on this touchy subject.
