APD’s crimes against children unit receives big funding boost

The Anchorage Police Department has just received a nearly 300-thousand dollar federal grant to use for investigations into internet crimes against children.

Its a program exploring the natural world and human relationships to the environment in Alaska. Recorded in the wild by award winning nature writer and cultural anthropologist Richard Nelson, Encounters returns to KSKA Thursdays at 1:30 PM. Richard Nelson is the executive producer, writer and narrator for Encounters, which has been broadcast on public radio stations throughout Alaska since January, 2004. Aurora is the topic this week, followed by Bald Eagles next week.

Eagle River Town Center gets new life

Last Friday, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich announced that the city and the Alaska Club chain want to purchase the Valley River Center building. If the deal works out, the municipality’s half would become a new “Eagle River Town Center.”

On a Friday evening in late September the UAA Honors College welcomed Howard Weaver, former editor of the Anchorage Daily News, to campus to discuss the ever-changing media scene.
Weaver’s speech, “Information Saturation: Sustaining a Place for Journalism in a Ubiquitous Media World,” draws on his decades of experience as a professional journalist — experience that started in Anchorage and captured two Pulitzer Prizes in 1976 and 1989. Today Weaver works as a VP for The McClatchy Company and guides editorial and strategic planning for some 80 newspapers nationwide.

Stage Talk: The Wizard of Oz & Audition for Murder

This week host Mark Muro is joined by director, Ron Holmstrom and Emily Decker, who plays Dorothy in the Anchorage Community Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Based on the book by L. Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz opens Friday, October 12th at the Mountain View Community Church in Anchorage.
Director, Codie Costello and actress, Ellen Reed also stopped by to talk about Audition for Murder, which opens Saturday, October 27th at the Bear Mountain Grill in Eagle River. This interactive murder mystery and dinner encourages audiences to hunt for clues and solve the mystery for a chance to win prizes.
