Tue, Jul 31, 2007

Monday afternoon the Governor’s specially-appointed Health Care Strategies Planning Council gathered in Anchorage for its second meeting. The council has until December to come up with strategies to help Alaskans access quality health care at reasonable costs. The council’s work so far has focused not on goals or legislative possibilities, but on facts.

Anchorage adding 2,500 jobs in steady growth trend

Fri, Jul 27, 2007

The Anchorage Economic Development Corporation released a mid-year report yesterday indicating the city will likely add 2,500 new jobs in 2007. That’s an increase of 1.7% over 2006 and continues a steady economic growth trend of nearly 20 years.

AEDC president Bill Pop pointed to significant growth in the business and professional services sector, which includes architectural, accounting and engineering jobs.

Pop said Anchorage has exceptional growth record when compared to other U.S. cities of similar size and the city has moved beyond the boom and bust cycles of the 70s and 80s, partly because of an increased demand for services as the city grows. He said service industry development helps keep more dollars in the state, especially in the area of health care.

Pop said the only area of slight decline was in new home starts, but he says this was offset by an increase in commercial construction.

Congratulations AK!

Wed, Jul 25, 2007

Please join us in congratulating AK on their third consecutive national win at the Public Radio News Directors, Inc. (PRNDI) national competition. AK was voted the Best News and Public Affairs Program at the PRNDI awards ceremony this past Saturday in New Orleans. AK first won second place in 2004 and has taken first place for 2005, 2006 and now 2007!

Better yet, AK didn’t win some small regional or token award. In the Division A competition, AK was up against reporting from local stations in the largest markets across the country, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, Chicago and more. They beat out 34 other worthy entrants in the process.

Be sure to check out the judges’ comments, as shown on the APRN site today. Their comments explain in detail why KSKA is proud to air AK every week, once on Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and again on Tuesday mornings at 11:00 a.m. (right after Talk of Alaska).

Congratulations to Duncan Moon, Executive Producer and Editor as well as Jessica Cochran, Rebecca Sheir, Ellen Lockyer, Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock, Scott Burton and the many contributors to AK from across Alaska!

The winning entry, from November 18, 2006, is attached to this posting. Or just visit the AK web site to browse the archives or sign up for the podcast.
