The Emergence of Paul Simon
Producer Paul Ingles hosts this two-hour special (Part 1 at 2:00pm, Part 2 at 7:00pm) on the creative output of heralded songwriter Paul Simon. Ingles draws from an impressive guest roster to explore how Simon connected with audiences in the 1960s as part of Simon & Garfunkel, in the 1970s as a solo artist and in the 1980s when he re-emerged as a world star with the release of his Graceland album. The program includes excerpts from several archival interviews of Simon. By mixing Simon’s music from key moments in his career with informed commentary from musicians and music critics, The Emergence of Paul Simon articulates what two generations of music lovers have found so compelling about this thoughtful and innovative writer and performer.

Guest commentators include Simon biographer Patrick Humphries and music writers Ann Powers, Anthony DeCurtis, Paul Zollo, Lydia Hutchinson, and Jim Fusilli, plus musicians Joseph Shabalala, Shawn Colvin, Deborah Holland and several others.

Funk and Fireworks
Celebrate the onset of summer and the anniversary of American independence with the four faces of New Orleans’ Mount Rushmore — Art, Aaron, Charles and Cyril — the Neville Brothers. Since 1954, when Brother Art hit with the ultimate carnival classic “Mardi Gras Mambo,” the Nevilles have been on the scene, solo or as a group. We’ll hear their legacy of soul, funk and R&B as the brothers tell us how it all came to pass. Plus summer road trips to a frozen custard stand on Route 66 and a county fair where Nick plays Drown the Clown. All that and a set of summer music from across the great American soundscape that’ll make you stand and salute. Learn more at www.americanroutes.org
