Anchorage Mayor reacts to Governor’s capital project vetoes

When Governor Sarah Palin signed the capital budget bill today she also vetoed nearly $250 million in projects, cutting more than $80 million in Anchorage-specific projects. Early this afternoon Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich reacted in a hastily-called press conference.

Assembly approves free WiFi for downtown Anchorage

Most of us know the warning, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” The Anchorage Assembly has. Before unanimously approving a leasing agreement offering free wireless service for downtown, members spent more than a half hour questioning municipal staff and a company (MetroFi) representative.

A new plan to drill for coal bed methane gas in the Matanuska Valley is under review by the Matanuska-Sustina Borough. Palmer-based Fowler Oil and Gas Corporation plans to drill one well using state-of-the-art techniques on an 840-acre site.

Anchorage Hillside homeowners target of new campaign to keep bears out of trash

Today officials in Anchorage announced a new effort to keep bears out of trash cans. The Fish and Game Department says between one and three bears has to be put down in the city each year when they get too comfortable searching Hillside neighborhoods for a late-night snack. Even Mayor Mark Begich admits he’s has to be increasingly vigilant.

Anchorage Assembly keeps Town Square name

Anchorage’s “Town Square Park” will remain “Town Square Park.” Last night the Anchorage Assembly by a 9 to 2 vote backed a compromise retaining the name while authorizing a yet-to-be designed tribute to all those credited with its creation.

The discussion also included the role the ASAA plays in state, school activities.
